There are two ways to admire and take pictures of the beauties you can find under water: you can practice snorkeling or scuba diving. There’s a big difference among these two, and I’ll tell you why.
Snorkeling is very cheap and easy to learn for everyone and can be practiced in any moment of the day even near the shore. All you need is a diving mask and a shaped tube called snorkel. If you also have two fins you can swim for hours without feeling tired. The diving mask and the snorkel are often sold together, like this U.S. Divers Admiral 2 Lx / Gulf Dry Adult Silicone Mask Combo (Electric Blue)
Scuba diving is more complicated and can be dangerous if you’re not skilled. For this reason it is usually required a license that you can take directly on site through a course. You must know, however, that the equipment required to take photos when scuba diving is completely different from that you can use when snorkeling, and the price too.
Point and shoot cameras are not made for this activity. They usualle are tested up to 30 ft/10 m. When scuba diving is not unusual to go deeper. So, what you need is a DSLR, a housing equipment and an underwater flash. Consider to spend not less than $1000 for the DSLR camera, and then, surprise, the housing for your DSLR camera can cost $2000 or more! So, if you are not rich and don’t plan to make underwater photography your profession, think twice before spending so much money.
