If you have a passion for photography I’m sure you’ll love this camera. And you’ll love it even more after the secret I’m going to tell you at the end of this article.
Let’s start with the features. This is a well-made digital camera with a solid metal body and excellent overall finish.
Canon claims this camera is waterproof up to 33ft/10m. It is a great improvement compared to the other point and shoot cameras, however I’m not so sure it’s a so great advantage. It’s quite rare going so deep while snorkeling, and on the other hand when scuba diving you easily go deeper than 10m. However, this is clearly an indication af a solid camera.
The wrist strap is already included in the box, so you don’t have to buy one separately.
This camera has also a 30 fps VGA (640X480) movie mode. It’s not much if compared to the competitors, but I think that we can forgive this, given the quality of all the other features.
The camera has many functions that make it suitable for any kind of user. The automatic functions make it easy to use for anyone, while advanced settings like for example the auto-focus lock will please the more expert photographers.
And now the secret I promised you; if you are a passionate photographer you probably know that one of the strongest points of DSLR cameras is the ability to shoot photographies in raw format. Furthermore, DSLR cameras have many advanced functions, like for example histograms, that point and shoot cameras don’t have. Until now. You’ll be pleased to know that if you are the lucky owner or are going to become the owner of a Canon camera you can have all these advanced functions for free, thanks to the CHDK project.
CHDK stands for Canon Hack Development Kit, and it’s a firmware that you can install on your memory card and will turn your camera in a Super Camera. You can discover more about this project by clicking on the link I give you, what I can tell you here is that no permanent changes are made to the camera, if something doesn’t work or you don’t like the firmware you simply erase it from the memory card and you will use again the standard firmware.
